MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — State Sen. David Tomassoni, a veteran lawmaker from northern Minnesota's Iron Range who championed efforts to find a cure for ALS, has died of complications from the neurological disease, the Minnesota Senate announced Friday. He was 69.
Tomassoni died Thursday night at a hospice in Duluth. He disclosed in July 2021 that he had been battling the incurable condition, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, or more formally as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It's a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Amazon-owned companies Ring and Hollywood studio MGM are partnering to create a TV show in the mold of “America’s Funniest Home Videos." MGM says the half-hour “Ring Nation” program will showcase viral footage from Ring’s doorbell and smart-home cameras. The series is the latest example of Amazon’s fusion of its various business arms. It also presents a branding and marketing opportunity for Amazon, which bought Ring in 2018. Since then, the company has dealt with rounds of privacy concerns around Ring and its relationship with police departments across the country. The show will be hosted by comedian Wanda Sykes and premier in syndication on September 26.
The World Health Organization is holding an open forum to rename the disease monkeypox, after some critics raised concerns the name could be derogatory or have racist connotations. In a statement Friday, the U.N. health agency said it has also renamed two families, or clades of the virus, using Roman numerals instead of geographic areas, to avoid stigmatization. WHO said the decision was made following a meeting of scientists this week and in line with current best practices for naming diseases, which aims to avoid causing offense based on factors including geography, culture or race. To date, there have been more than 31,000 cases of monkeypox identified globally since May.
Former Mississippi public safety commissioner David Huggins has died at age 74. The Department of Public Safety said Friday that Huggins died of health complications Wednesday. Huggins became a state trooper in 1969. He was chief of the Mississippi Highway Patrol from 1988 to 1992 under Democratic Gov. Ray Mabus, then served as commissioner of the Department of Public Safety from 2000 to 2004 under Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove. Huggins was sergeant-at-arms for the Mississippi Senate from 2004 to 2008 — one of the top security positions inside the state Capitol. In 2008, he became chief investigator for the state auditor’s office.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has tested positive for COVID-19 and won't play in the team’s first preseason game. Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the diagnosis at practice. Cousins was absent for a second straight day after feeling ill and being sent home. Cousins has “very minimal” symptoms, according to O’Connell. Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond will split time in the exhibition Sunday at Las Vegas. Cousins was unlikely to play much if at all if he wasn’t sick. There are no other quarterbacks on the roster.

Reaching the age of 25 is usually a sign of hitting adulthood, a signal to put away all childish things. Not for “South Park.” The Comedy Central staple about four bratty, perpetually bundled-up youngsters in an unhinged Colorado cartoon town keeps trundling along, fueled by poo jokes and razor-sharp social satire. To celebrate the series’ 25th birthday, Parker and Stone have returned to Colorado with a concert filmed at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre near Denver, headlined by Primus and alternative rockers Ween. Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson also stopped by to play.
With inflation raging near its highest level in four decades, Congress is poised to approve President Joe Biden’s signature Inflation Reduction Act. Its title raises a tantalizing question: Will the measure actually do what it says? Economic analyses suggest that the answer is likely no — not anytime soon, anyway. The legislation, which is headed for final approval Friday and will then be signed into law, won’t directly address some of the main drivers of surging prices — from gas and food to rents and restaurant meals. Still, over time, the bill could save money for some Americans by lessening the cost of certain prescription drugs for the elderly, extending health insurance subsidies and reducing energy prices.
Long-haul trucking has always been a tough job that keeps drivers away from their families for days and sometimes weeks. It’s no wonder there’s a perennial shortage of them. The pool of available drivers is aging — the median age is about 46 and climbing — and the industry is struggling to a…
Bubba Wallace and 23XI Racing have announced a multiyear contract extension ahead of Wallace’s final push to earn a spot in NASCAR’s playoffs. The Cup team owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan launched in late 2020 built around Wallace, the only Black driver competing at NASCAR’s top level. Wallace is coming off the first pole of his career at Michigan International Speedway. But he came up one spot short of the playoff-clinching victory he needs to earn one of the 16 spots in NASCAR’s championship field.

The FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate has already sent reverberations across the country even as new details emerge about what federal agents were looking for in the investigation into whether he took classified records from the White House to his Florida residence. Trump is facing legal scrutiny from multiple quarters and has denied wrongdoing, but the search this week is linked to whether he took classified records from the White House and has been months in the making. The saga began in January when 15 boxes of presidential records are retrieved from Mar-a-Lago.
Inflation, a labor shortage, effects from the lingering COVID pandemic and increasingly devastating fires are boosting the cost of insurance for homes, cars and businesses.

A Republican legislative leader from Wisconsin has fired the former state Supreme Court justice he hired to investigate the 2020 election, just three days after the lawmaker beat a primary opponent the investigator had endorsed and campaigned for. Friday's firing of Michael Gableman caps a 14-month ride that saw him hired by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to look into the election under pressure from Donald Trump. But as the probe progressed under bipartisan criticism, Vos’s relationship soured with both Trump and Gableman. Vos said Friday that after talking with fellow Republicans, it became clear to him the only choice was to close Gableman's office.
Hundreds of Syrian opposition supporters have rallied in several locations in northwestern Syria to denounce remarks by Turkey’s foreign minister urging them to reconcile with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. Demonstrators at one of the rallies on Friday, outside a Turkish military post in the northwestern Syrian town of Mastoumeh, chanted that the “Turkish army is a traitor” and that “Syrian people are not for sale.” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has drawn rebuke from Syria's opposition after he said Turkey supports a political reconciliation between Syrian opposition factions and Assad’s government — for the sake of peace.
A federal judge has reinstated a moratorium on coal leasing from federal lands that was imposed under former President Barack Obama and then scuttled under former President Donald Trump. Friday’s ruling from U.S. District Judge Brian Morris requires government officials to complete a new environmental review before they can resume coal sales from federal lands. Few leases have been sold in recent years as coal demand shrank drastically, but it remains a major contributor of planet-warming emissions. But the industry’s opponents had urged Morris to revive the Obama-era moratorium to ensure it can’t make a comeback as wildfires, drought, rising sea levels and other effects of climate change worsen.
Police in Florida say they will investigate a lawmaker’s allegation that a transgender student may have sexually assaulted a female student in a middle school bathroom over the summer. But school officials in Brevard County say no such attack took place and investigators say they received no reports about the rumor. Melbourne police assigned two detectives to investigate the allegations after reading Republican State Rep. Randy Fine’s social media posts about the alleged attack. Fine says parents told him that they learned about the incident from a teacher who is afraid to go public with the information. Russell Bruhn disputed Fine’s allegations, saying, “No attack took place."
A federal appeals court is ordering statewide elections for two Georgia public service commissioners back onto the November ballot. Friday's ruling came only a week after a federal judge postponed the elections after finding that electing the five commissioners statewide illegally diluted Black votes. The decision by three judges on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals follows a U.S. Supreme Court decision that says judges shouldn’t order changes close to elections. District 3 Commissioner Fitz Johnson and District 2 Commissioner Tim Echols are both Republicans seeking reelection to six-year terms. Johnson is being challenged by Democrat Shelia Edwards. Echols faces Democrat Patty Durand and Libertarian Colin McKinney.
A Democratic candidate for the Oregon House of Representatives is suing the owner of a massage parlor in Woodburn, Oregon, after he says she tried to initiate sexual contact with him. Oregon Public Broadcasting reports that in a suit filed in Marion County Circuit Court Thursday, Anthony Medina claims the owner of Woodburn Spa caused him “emotional injury and mental anguish, trauma, an inability to form close relationships, nightmares” and other negative effects in the incident. Medina is requesting damages of $450,000. He’s also asking a court to block the owner from operating parlors in Woodburn, Portland and Eugene that were registered with the state under her name. Medina, the chair of the Woodburn School Board, is currently the Democratic nominee for House District 22.

Troy Kotsur, who made history as the first deaf man to win an Academy Award, has been honored with a key to his Arizona hometown. Kotsur, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in March, was given the key to the city Thursday in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa. During a ceremony, he called it a special honor in the place he will “always consider home.” Kotsur won just about every major acting prize for his role as a father and fisherman in “CODA.” Kotsur’s family has deep roots in the city. His father was the police chief. His grandfather was also a police officer.
State Sen. David Tomassoni, a veteran lawmaker from Minnesota’s Iron Range, has died of complications from the neurological disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 69. Tomassoni died Thursday night at a hospice in Duluth. As one of his last major accomplishments, Tomassoni authored a $25 million bill to fund research into the disease and support caregivers. Gov. Tim Walz signed it at an emotional ceremony in March. By then, Tomassoni was confined to a wheelchair and could communicate only with a speech synthesizer. But his sense of humor remained intact, quipping that he should have asked for more.
Former President Donald Trump denounced the FBI search of his Florida home as a “hoax” on Friday without disputing that he had top secret nuclear documents stashed at Mar-a-Lago.
It’s fine not to like the new “A League of Their Own” series, says the cast. But only if it’s for the right reasons.
Social media users shared a range of false claims this week. Here are the facts: An image purporting to show Ghislaine Maxwell with the judge who approved the FBI search warrant for Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was manipulated by combining two unrelated photos. Monkeypox hasn't been detected in Georgia drinking water. A video of a speech by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was translated incorrectly to English. The World Health Organization Director-General is vaccinated against COVID-19, and scientists say a recent finding that Earth is spinning slightly faster is no cause for concern.
Penny Marshall’s 1992 “A League of Their Own” movie introduced the world to a group of women who fought their way onto a baseball field, but it only featured women who were straight, white, presentable.
Louisiana’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal filed by plaintiffs in the ongoing legal battle over the state’s abortion ban. The rejection Friday means the state’s near-total abortion ban is still in effect as legal challenges to the law proceed. The ruling marked a major blow to abortion-rights advocates and providers, who had hoped the ban would be blocked for a third time, allowing the three clinics in the state to begin performing procedures again. Louisiana’s ban was designed to take effect when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling establishing nationwide abortion rights. The ban does not include exceptions for rape or incest.

Documentarian Ed Perkins' new Diana film “The Princess” has no talking heads and no traditional narrator. Instead, it tells the story of her public life using only archival footage, news broadcasts, talk shows and radio programs from the time of her earliest moments being trailed by cameras at the news of her royal courtship to the aftermath of her death. Perkins hopes that the film offers a new perspective by turning the lens back on us, the media and the onlookers, and offers insights into things that are happening today. “The Princess” premieres Saturday on HBO at 8 p.m. Eastern.
