In an attempt to enhance the security of the Taj Mahal, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to replace the existing barbed wire fencing with iron mesh fencing supported with iron angles and concertina coils on the top in about 300 meters of area around the monument.

Besides this, two separate Porta cabins will also be set up for security staff members for better protection of the heritage monument during the rainy season.

According to a report published in the Times of India (TOI), ASI’s superintending Archaeologist (Agra circle) R K Patel said that existing barbed wire fencing around the monument was installed almost 15 years ago, which now has been damaged.

As per TOI reports, R K Patel said the length of lightning poles on the side of the Yamuna will also be reduced from 8 ft to 5 ft, facilitating a clear night view of the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh, adding that ‘focus lights’ will be installed around the monument for added security.

According to the officials, all the upgradation work will cost Rs 40 lakh.

In a treat to the tourists, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to make entry to the Taj Mahal free for three days on February 27, 28 and March 1.

Notably, this exemption is given every year on the occasion of Urs of Shah Jahan.
