A Car Battery & 9 More Of The Strangest Things Under The WWE Ring

We've seen some strange things emerge from under a WWE ring over the years, always popping out at just the right time.

Much like the rest of the WWE roster, the ring crew is like a traveling circus as well. They spend the same 300-plus days a year, they’re on the road lugging all sorts of equipment and tools with them to set up the 20 x 20 squared circle where all the action happens. Regular ring crew guys, referees, and for a time in developmental, even Brock Lesnar were responsible for setting up the ring.

They all should be fired (kayfabe wise). Somehow, no matter how much care the crew gives tightening up the turnbuckles and tying down the aprons, they still found ways for all sorts of strange things to find their way underneath the ring.

Shortly after Kane first unmasked, he was even more of a crazed madman than he was with the mask on. He would eventually engage in a war with Shane McMahon that started when the monster tombstoned Linda McMahon.

It eventually led to a real twisted moment on Raw. With Shane McMahon handcuffed to the ring post, Kane had stashed a car battery of all things under the ring to jumpstart McMahon’s um…grapefruits. All these years later, and this moment has constantly been referenced, seemingly singed into every fan's memory.

Originally popularized in the wrestling business by The Sandman in ECW, Kendo sticks have not only become commonplace, they get stored underneath the ring. We often see the kendo stick come out in no holds barred matches and they're likely used because with head shots being banned with foreign objects, the kendo stick makes for a good weapon to attack an opponent's body.

Bamboo might be a very strong material, but it’s just not used in prepping the ring. Clearly none of these authority figures seem to mind opponents breaking the rules.

They might not be needed in the construction of the ring, but you never know when you might need an extra table or two for people to sit.

Whether they’re going to be used in a contract signing segment, or setting up an announce table or two, it makes a bit of sense that extra tables are under the ring. At least until Bubba Ray asks his brother to get the tables.

Using a ladder to put up a truss or some sort of lighting rig makes a lot of sense. But the litany of ladders underneath the ring is out of this world. But when wrestlers like The Hardys, Edge, Christian, and the Dudleys were around, ladders were very commonplace around the ring.

Nowadays, during Money In The Bank and TLC matches, they’re shoved underneath there as well. Once again, it's not too bizarre, but again, why are there so many under the ring at all times?

Not just for taking a seat in the business, when fans see a chair, they know full well a head or another body part is about to meet a steel chair or two. However, why on earth are so many stashed under the ring?

In fact, why are there so many even around the ring? How often do we see people sitting around the ring besides the announcers, commentators, and other ringside personnel who have much comfier chairs to sit on than cold steel ones.

Arguments can be made for reasons that certain hardware is underneath a wrestling ring. But who the heck is going bowling in a wrestling arena, much less ringside?!

During the heyday of The Attitude Era’s Hardcore Division had all sorts of plunder underneath the ring. Bowling balls were a completely different level of absurdity. We even saw it make another appearance at WrestleMania this year, in Sami Zayn and Johnny Knoxville's match.

Once Jake The Snake Roberts became a nasty vile heel, he began carrying a nasty vile King Cobra with him to the ring. Then the cobra bit Randy Savage in the most horrific footage of the Expansion Era. Several days later, President Jack Tunney thought he had curtailed the snake by banning it from ringside.

However, when Jake met Savage in their first grudge match at Tuesday In Texas, Jake complied by not having the snake at ringside, but it was actually lurking underneath the ring.

Of all the weaponry that can be found under the ring, Barbed wire is a very strange and violent one. It’s wrapped around all sorts of weapons meant for maiming opponents. Guys like Cactus Jack and Terry Funk wrapped it around chairs, baseball bats, and 2 x 4s.

At One Night Stand, Mick Foley found a huge piece of plywood littered with the razor wire all over it. That same razor wire the ring crew had to cut the Funker out of in a gruesome sight.

For practically a decade, when WWE superstars headed underneath the ring to get something, sometimes they’d wind up with a leprechaun coming after them.

Hornswoggle spent most of his entire WWE run living underneath the ring no matter who he was helping - be it Finlay, The Great Khali, or even DX, Swoggle made a career out of “living” underneath the ring and showing up at the strangest times.

Not only did Hornswoggle live underneath the ring. But in the WWE Universe, there is apparently a portal underneath the ring.

That portal would transport Triple H and Shawn Michaels to Little People’s Court. So not only did Swoggle live under the ring, but evidently underneath the ring is where ALL little people live. In one of the most bizarre segments in WWE history, DX stood on trial for their actions against Hornswoggle and little people in general.
